Orange and Lime Love.
For my 16th Birthday, my mother asked me what kind of cake I wanted. I asked for my old favorite. A cake I somewhat invented when I was three and my mother perfected. I wanted an Orange cake with Lime frosting. It is a perfect union if you are the type who enjoys citrus flavored baked goods. I must say I am still impressed with my three year old self for coming up with such a perfect combo of flavors. Of course stores don't sell orange flavored cake mix nor do they sell lime flavored frosting. Once again I had to be weird and make everything more difficult. Many children just love chocolate-chocolate or Funfetti but not me... I order off menu. My mom made me her special cake, flavored with orange and lime Jell-O. unbeknownst to either of us, my grandmother also heard my request for orange-lime cake. She also made me a cake, similar but totally different from Mom's. Grandma made my cake with orange juice and lime zest, it was all from scratch. Mom's cake was candy and Grandma's cake was a spring afternoon in the English country. I loved both of those cakes, they were perfect. Now that I look back, I realize that my Grandmother died a month after this glorious cake. She was dying at the time from esophageal cancer and probably couldn't eat any of it. At the time I didn't know how sick she was, I didn't even notice if she ate cake or not. What an act of love it was for her to make such a beautiful cake when she couldn't share it at all. I wish I had photos from that party, I wish I had photos of the cakes and my family that day... but they are etched in my heart and I really wish I had someone to make me a cake like one of those. A cake that is made purely of love (and flour and sugar) even when it's not easy like chocolate. I wish I could make a cake like that.
Happy Birthday.

The world through red glass.
My sister gave me a camera filter for my birthday (or was it Christmas? I'm not sure)
No filter/color;
No filter/ Black&White
Filter/ Black&White
(results unclear... perhaps the fennel in my front yard isn't the most photogenic test subject)
No filter/ Black & White (woah it's so bright!!)
Filter/ Black & White (Awesome detail!!)
Filter... lots of detail, soft and delicate...
I think I like the no filter flower just because the contrast is cool...
The dog is super psyched about my new filter too!
Ooh and look at what happens if I just put the filter on and leave it on the color setting... I get art!
So cool!
--Thanks Kelly Beth!

March 30th
Since I don't have any photos of my Dad's birthdays as a kid, I present this photo montage re-imagining of what one of his parties could have looked like...

Summer in June!
One year I froze my butt off at Stensin Beach, another year I froze in Santa Cruz, there was one time I tried to plan a picnic by the lake and it was grey and cold all day.
I am a summer baby. All of my childhood birthdays were in the sunshine, with watermelon, rhubarb pie in the front yard, or by the pool, running around in short sleeves!
It makes me perpetually miffed that June 28th is usually bloody cold and grey in the bay area. Last year I ran away to Idyllwild for some guaranteed summer. This year it was summer. This year it was warm walking through the redwoods. I was quite happy that the weather colluded with the date this year.

Distant memories...

This day many years ago... I remember it was dark out and I was in the passenger's seat of the Travellall. Was I strapped into a child's seat? I don't think so, perhaps we left in a hurry or I was so used to it I didn't even think about it. I remember peaking over the seat while my baby sister was being born in the back because she wouldn't wait the hour and a half to be born in the hospital... I couldn't see much because I was too small and Dad told me to stay put. There was a lot of breathing and then a couple of baby cries but not much noise really. I also remember waiting in some building at the side of the road that wasn't the hospital... and then the hospital where it was brightly lit and they wouldn't let me see the new baby because I was too little (at least that was my understanding of it). That I am afraid is all I remember from my sister's day of birth... its a little self centered but I was four and a half, what do you expect?
Happy Birthday Kelly Bug! I'm glad you were born! I have more clear memories of your first birthday when you got your first black eye... and of corse most of your birthdays thereafter. Have a great day this year! Don't run into the hearth.
Love you!!!

Happy Birthday to Alex

Today is my one of my oldest* and most dear friend's birthday (*that is oldest in the amount of time I've known him, not his time on the Earth). Unfortunately he lives in Hamburg and I can't get away to take him out on the town tonight. I can't even think of what to send him for the occasion. I know he has a thing for new office supplies... but really he lives in Germany. All of my favorite art supplies are from there, I imagine that their pens are equally superior to ours and they probably have some equivalent to post-its that make shipping them across the Atlantic a silly idea. I could send him a book... but which one? I went to the book store and nothing I saw was exotic or exciting enough for him in my opinion. I'll probably think of the perfect something in a month or two... in the mean time;

The top 10 things I love about Alex;
1. He's insightful
2. He keeps me smiling
3. He's a perfectionist
4. He has an amazing aesthetic sense
5. He always manages to keep me balanced
6. We still can write each other full letters after ten years!
7. He loves discussing art.
8. He doesn't balk to tell me when I'm being boring.
9. I can ask him about critical artistic choices and get a real answer.
10. He has an air of beauty about him.
...wow 10 was easy! I could go on, but I shant because he is also very modest and doesn't take praise very well...
Happy Birthday Alex!

They say it's my birthday...
... and I say this is the greatest birthday song Ever. Children should be taught the Beatles instead of that old one... I really want to see a classroom with one 7 year old rockin' the guitar in the back... yea.

Happy Birthday to Alex

Yes another Leo Birthday (and one more to come). For those who do not know the handsome fellow on this post, he is one of my dearest friends in the whole world and I have now known him for twelve years! He is the other half of my brain which explains why I can get scattered at times (the other half of my brain lives in Hamburg) . His mother and I agree that he sometimes takes himself too seriously, but I think that he's been working on that a lot in the past decade. Alex is a brilliant scenic designer, a detail oriented artisan, a philosopher and has a sparkeling soul.
Yay Alex!
Wish I could take you out for a celebration today but I'm afraid my teleporter is on the fritz.

Happy Birthday Mom!
A poem I found for my momma;
My Treasure Chest is filled with gold
gold... gold... gold...
Vagabond's gold and drifter's gold...
worthless, priceless dreamer's gold...
gold of the sunset... gold of the dawn
gold of the shower trees on my lawn
poet's gold and artist's gold
gold that cannot be bought or sold...
Gold.
-Dan Blanding

You were a really cute little kid (creepy how much my baby pics look like yours)...
Sending a b-day card soon... just trying to get my act together... so it will be a real surprise when it gets there.
I Love you.

happy birthday to me/journal entry
Well now it's official, I am 28... unless you count by the exact hour which won't happen until 11:03 am. My final day as a 27 year old was good and then surreal and then kind of crappy. I did get my birthday package from my parents and spent my dad's "gift certificate" (cash) on yummy food at the Berkeley Bowl, including rhubarb for my birthday pie... which I hope I have time to bake. I had a job interview and got a new part time job, and then about 20 minutes later I got a call from our shop assistant asking me to come in and help her out because the shop supervisor quit in the middle of the day. I watched the designer run through... the first dress will not have costumes and well, we're just kind of treading water now. The shop assistant and I went out for drinks with the former shop manager... I met some cool guys who taught me how to play darts (beyond just aiming the darts at the bulls eye) so now I am back at home in the wee hours of the morning tired but determined to bake my damn pie! I should be upset at the shop manager or something but I'm not in any way because I could see this disaster coming from a mile away... my next concern is the car that is driving on stage for the show. In the scottish play there were horses that were on deck and made us question the integrity of the stage... Renee and I are NOT going to be under the deck during the driving scenes. Somehow I've made myself just detached enough to not be upset by my company anymore. :p

Happy Birthday Dad!

This is the only photographic proof I have that my Dad was little. Perhaps it is because he was the youngest of four, perhaps it's because the cave paintings have been worn down by time ;) ... None the less here's my ever loving Dad as a little kid, he is the one in the striped shirt on the far right of the picture. I love you Dad!

Happy Birthday Kelly Beth!
It's my baby sister's 23rd Birthday today! This day 23 years ago she made us all get up at an ungodly hour because she was in a huge rush to be born. She couldn't even wait to make it to the hospital. I stared back from the passenger's seat while Kelly was being delivered in the back of the Travelall... so since I have no pictures of that, here's one taken a few years later. Love you KB!
